Elder Abuse: Recognizing and Reporting

Once our parents get old, it is only reasonable to take care of them. Putting them inside a nursery home is always an option, as they will receive much needed care and attention they need and deserve.

Unfortunately, many elderly were neglected and abused (physically, verbally, sexually) lately. This has become a growing concern.

Stats: 1 in every 14 elders are being neglected or abused in the US alone. This is a serious problem, one that requires special and immediate attention. Just imagine if it was your parent who was abused or neglected inside the nursery home. Would you do something about it?

Start by recognizing the problem

Has it been a while since you last visited your loved one inside a nursery home? How about you pay them a visit and see how he/she is doing.

What if you encounter a problem, or see that something is not as it is supposed to be? What if your loved one is not getting the attention it should receive, or is being neglected, or even worse?
  • Start by validating the issue by talking with your loved one. Find a way to communicate if your loved one is too old or has speaking problems.
  • You may also request to talk to a head nurse, a manager or anyone in charge of the institution if you believe that your loved one is not treated properly. If they are not able to help you, you should speak with a skilled and knowledgeable attorney.
Here at The Law Offices of J. Jeffrey Herman we have many professional attorneys who will dedicate their time and fight to make sure that your loved one/s get that they legally deserve. Give us a call, and we will schedule a free consultation for you.

Report the problem!

Most people fail to the basic of things – recognize the problem and report the problem. Once you have discovered that there is something wrong with the treatment your loved one is receiving, you have to report the problem so that it becomes a known issue. You can later use this report as evidence supporting your case.

Elder Abuse is happening every day, and due to failure to act immediately and according to the law, nothing is being done to prevent any future mistreatment.

Don’t make the same mistakes people before you did. Get an attorney, and start taking proper legal actions against the institution or facility which is in charge of taking care of your loved one.

Bullying is real!

Some of these elderly are just too afraid to talk for fear of retaliation. They are in their late years, and they cannot fend for themselves. If they are bullied on a daily basis, the chances are that they won’t let you know what is going on.
